Years from now, what will people look back on and see as problematic?
If your grand kids would think you are a terrible person for how you treat disabled people, stop treating disabled people like shit. Just because other people are doing or it's "normal" doesn't mean it's okay to do. Don't be on the wrong side of history.
Sit down and write a list of things that people years from now will think is problematic. Most importantly, write the reason why it's bad. Taking note of this is the first step to changing your perspective.
If the goal was truly being achieved, what would be different?
I'll use a hospital as an example. If the goal of a hospital was for people to get better, what would be different about it? Probably wouldn't have long ER wait times. Probably would discharge people based on medical necessity and not insurance coverage. Probably the doctor would listen to you and explain medical procedures, medications, and their risks, as well as making sure you are comfortable through the process and are aware of your rights. Probably it would be clean enough to not have preventable spread of hospital-aquired infections. Probably there would be less discrimination. The list goes on.
Pick a problem you are familiar with, and what system is responsible for it. Write down what the goal, in a perfect world, should be. Then write down all the things that go against that goal, and what the alternative solutions to those things are. Additionally, after having noted all the things that go against the goal that was stated, you can identify what the REAL goal is based solely on the actions, even if it was not said aloud.
