Solving Food Insecurity with Meal Deliveries

It started with a question.

"How do people eat food if they can't make food?"

Always eating take-out is a luxury. It's a reality that some people are food insecure because they can't make food. It's common for people with severe disabilities, but it goes beyond that- elderly people and those short on time due to work or other obligations can struggle with making food as well. I thought that one way this could be solved is if there was a food service that delivered pre-prepared meals that fulfill all nutritional requirements. In diverse areas, people would have the option to buy meals from their culture. There would be different options for different dietary restrictions such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, etc. There would also be customized options for those with dietary restrictions due to a disability or other heath issue. This food service would be compatible with food insecurity resources. For example, in the US we have something called EBT SNAP benefits. There are many restrictions that make it difficult to use but to sum it up it's a card you can use to buy food. The food service could provide someone with all the food they needed within the amount on the card, especially when that amount does not represent the price of food.

Overall it would be important to keep food prices affordable and have benefit amounts match to avoid forced dependency on government benefits, especially for those that enjoy cooking.

Sustainable Development Goal 2.1 is to end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round by 2030. A strong meal delivery program in every community could be one piece to help make it happen.
