How Open Borders Could Actually Work- City Codes, Personal Property, Cultural Competency, End Private Property.
I've heard a lot of people say open borders would be a disaster because of how many people would move.
The first solution to that is building large-scale affordable housing. In a global housing shortage, people moving feels dire. There are very few places a person can go without gentrifying someone else because the act of moving is pushing someone out. Mass migration, as we see from people fleeing red states, is not working because the lack of housing causes homelessness.
After we have enough housing, the second solution to this issue are city codes.City codes help maintain safe and sanitary environments, and they have been used in very problematic ways. One way they could be used for good is to develop rules on taking care of the natural environment. If housing was affordable everywhere and there were no boundaries, too many people would move to desirable areas. This would be really bad for the environment in those areas- habitats would be destroyed and species would be wiped out.
City codes would protect these environments, and prevent situations like "the libertarian bear problem" where libertarian de-regulation lead to erratic and violent behavior among local bears.
But what are city codes in a society without boundaries? Instead of cities, states, and countries we'd have ecosystems and biomes. This would include "industrial" ecosystems where cities already existed- these areas would allow for dense housing to reduce the destruction of habitats.
We also need to end ownership of property. Right now we have a big divide between people who own property, and those who don't. The ones that do get to decide the rules. In a world where human rights and accessibility are the exception, not the norm, private property is often violent. If a survivor is eventually able to own property, they can live in a small bubble where they get to make the rules, but it is isolating. Ending ownership of private property reduces violence. This would not mean that people would be free to cross other's boundaries- instead of private ownership, personal property would be respected.
Cultural competency would be important to use as people move. Certain areas would receive large groups of people from different demographics due to natural disasters and overpopulation. With systems thinking in mind, these people with different paradigms would need systems to adjust and change in order for the system to be functional and equitable.
