Vibrant red stands for femininity, and sky blue stands for masculinity. Dark purple stands for everything in between and outside of femininity and masculinity. Grey stands for intersectionality.

The red, purple, and blue can be applied to gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, biological sex, and gender expression.

Intersectionality is the way that no one person has a single identity, and acknowledges we all have many identities. Our identities are not black and white. The grey can represent your nationality, ethnicity, religion, race, age, class, ability, education, and everything else that makes you, you.

Rad can be best described as umbrella term for identities that fall under acronyms like GRAIED, which is an alternative acronym to LGBTQIA+.

GRAIED: Gender Relationships Attractions Intersex Expression Dysphoria

Gender represents those with non-cis gender identities. This includes people who are transgender, nonbinary, and others whose gender does not align with their gender decided at birth.

Relationships represents those who are in non-hetero, sexual, romantic, or platonic relationships, regardless of sexual or romantic orientation. Relationships also includes people who are in polyamorous relationships.

Attractions represents those with non-hetero sexual or romantic orientations.

Intersex represents people who are intersex. (Those born not biologically female or male)

Expression represents those who are gender nonconforming, & those who have a life-style of crossdressing or drag.

Dysphoria represents those who have gender dysphoria, regardless of the label they use to identify their gender, or if they use a label. Gender dysphoria is not the same as dysmorphia.

Rad is cross cultural, and can be applied to other versions of GRAIED identities around the world. Rad recognizes that not all cultures have translatable versions of GRAIED identities.

Rad Values

1. EMPOWERMENT THROUGH COMMUNITY ACTION

The purpose of the word rad and the Rad Pride flag is to unite a community and empower all those who experience discrimination and oppression for being rad.

We will raise the voices of those who have been silenced, we will support those who have been denied, we will remember those who have been lost, we will respect those who have been disrespected, we will strive to give futures to those who have lost hope.

WE WILL FIGHT TOGETHER AS ONE UNTIL ALL OUR SIBLINGS ARE LIBERATED.

It is the responsibility of those who have risen above oppression to reach down and raise the ones below. Liberation will not be achieved until rad-oppressing laws in all nations are abolished, and our people's blood is no longer being spilled at the hands of hate. It is every individual's responsibility to take action against rad oppressing forces, so we can all be at peace.

2. GLOBAL UNITY

Rad is a word that can be used cross culturally and internationally. While Rad is an umbrella term for GRAIED, it recognizes that GRAIED is made up of western labels specific to the English language, and these labels have been discovered in recent history. Other cultures have had their own words, labels, and unlabeled rad identities that have existed for hundreds, or even thousands, of years. Rad is free to be used by other cultures as an umbrella term to use for their cultural version of GRAIED identities. The rad community understands that not all versions of GRAIED in other cultures are close comparison or has a close translation, and some cultures’ ideas and identities related to GRAIED do not translate. Even so, they are welcomed and encouraged to use the label rad. The rad community understands if a culture or individuals of a culture do not wish to use rad or be called rad.

The rad community recognizes that non-western rad identified people have been negatively impacted by colonialism and imperialism, which can cause them to be more likely to experience life-threatening discrimination and oppression. The intention of the rad community is to globally unite all rad-identified people to fight for rad rights on an international level, with rad people who have acceptance privilege to listen, support, and raise the voices of rad people who do not have acceptance privilege.

3. TOLERANCE OF INTERSECTIONALITY

Intersectionality is one of the key ideas behind the Rad Pride Flag. The rad community recognizes that rad people are made up of many different identities. Rad people come from different classes, races, religions, political affiliations, and many more identities. The rad community has no place for discrimination. Rad people are tolerant. No rad person will ever know all rad identities, but all rad people will listen and be understanding towards all rad people. A rad person will not agree with all identities, beliefs, and opinions, but a rad person will be respectful.

4. REPRESENTING THE UNDERREPRESENTED

The rad community supports and validates all rad identities, and understands that each rad identity has unique struggles. Rad people from all societies will acknowledge and welcome underrepresented rad people in their local or societal community. The rad community in the Western world recognizes that in Western society, intersex people are frequently underrepresented in LGBTQIA+ spaces. The rad community will be intentional about including intersex people into rad spaces, by recognizing their unique struggles and raising the voices of intersex people. Rad recognizes that people’s intersex identity is different from their gender identity, orientations, and expressions, and no intersex person is the same. Rad includes intersex people who identify as straight and cis.

5. LABEL CHOICE

The rad community recognizes that labels are individual to each person. The rad community allows people to choose their own labels, or choose to not use labels. People who use the same label are not the same, and should not be seen as the same. In addition, stereotypes do not define a label. The rad community recognizes that while a person falls under the GRAIED acronym, they can choose to not identify as rad.

Street Protest

CelebratinG the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

The Stonewall Riots started on June 28th, 1969, following a long history of social and legal oppression. After one too many police raids on the Stonewall Inn, the people rioted outside the illegal gay bar. This event sparked the Gay Liberation Movement and the LGBT rights Movement. Two key figures were Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, both transgender women of color. Along with their efforts for gay rights, they also fought for homeless LGBT youth, and fought against the HIV/AIDS crisis.
